Character analysis of John Kumalo

Private Life:
He was also a priest and use to go to church but when he came to Johannesburg he decided not to be a priest any longer. He became corrupted by all the power that he received. He lies in order to protect his son but he does not care if his brother's son has to be killed. He is only concerned about himself and his worldly possessions.

Public Life:
He was respected and received a lot of praise from the public. He stood up for what he believed in. He said whatever he felt like saying. He was not afraid of anyone.

Peoples' perception:
Some people respect him and see him as a wise man. But his brother and Msimangu are disappointed in him- he lies and he longer is a priest. He is also very well known and wealthy.

Character analysis of James Jarvis

Private life:
He is generous because he helps the people of Ndotsheni and he helps to develop the place. After reading the Manuscript of his late son he now understands black people. He also realized what was happening in his country (apartheid) and he was then concerned about the racial justice.

Public Life:
He is known as a silent farmer and engineer. He is not concern about the blacks or apartheid unlike his son. Apartheid did not affect him in the least. But after the death of his son he cared and was respectful towards the blacks.

Peoples' perceptions:
He was a silent man. He does not care about other people or racial justice. After Arthur dies he respects Stephen and his culture.

Chracter analysis of Absalom Kumalo

Private Life:
When I first read about him I thought he was caring and helpful because he left his home, village and family to help his aunt find her husband in Johannesburg. He was a respectful young man.

Public Life:
When he went to Johannesburg he had lost his morals, got involved with the wrong company and was led astray. He was no longer that respectful young man but was now a criminal. He was seen as a criminal.

Peoples' perceptions:
He is irresponsible- he gets a woman pregnant before marriage. He had an opportunity to change his life by entering the reformatory but instead he kills someone.

My city... Johannesburg

My City Johannesburg

The centre of the world is Saudi
And the centre of South Africa is Jozi.

From deep and down in the slums
From different regions they come.

From high in the sky New York it seems,
With all the lights and all the beams.

Zoom in and get a better look,
And amazingly you'll see the truth.

Is it so stunning and striking or is it
Just me stereotyping?

Justice

Justice

Justice is the cry of the oppressed.
He who ensures it is often blessed.
Mercy is the quality of the kind hearted
It can not be shown by those who have departed.

Justice and mercy are not always two of the same.
As he did not show mercy in the justice game.
In modern times justice has its limitations
In a world full with imitations.

Character analysis of Theophilus Msimangu

Theophilus Msimangu is Stephen Kumalo’s host and guide in Johannesburg. He is a warm, generous, humble and young minister at the Mission House in Sophiatown. Msimangu has an acute understanding of the problems that face South Africa. He explains to Kumalo about the political and socioeconomic difficulties that the black population faces. He helps Kumalo understand the people and places that they encounter, and is unfailingly sympathetic to Kumalo, making Kumalo’s quest his top priority. He makes Kumalo’s time in Johannesburg bearable. He sometimes speaks unkindly, but he quickly repents. He gives Kumalo all of his worldly possessions and his eventual decision is to join a monastery as a final testament to the depth of his faith and generosity.

Evaluation on the "Vaal Hearings"

Evaluation on the Vaal Hearings:

The idea of publishing a book on the apartheid era is a very interesting and motivating experience. This motivated us to find out more about South Africa's past. I found it to be quite interesting because I learnt a lot about people's apartheid experiences. I also learnt a lot about apartheid itself and how people fought and went through hardship for our freedom. Some people were so brave and were willing to do anything for equality and justice to be served. It was very sad to hear of the inhuman way the non- Whites were treated. The story that really amazed me was that some Whites, in our country, did not even know what was really going on. Some only learned about apartheid lately. They lived normal lives. By writing this book, it can even give a person an opportunity of following a career of becoming a writer. I really enjoyed the entire "Vaal Hearings" experience so far.
